Newborns of Ukrainian war
Art project devoted to the children born during the russian invasion to Ukraine in 2022
On 24 February 2022, Russia attacked the Ukraine, my Motherland. Until today, more than 225 children were brutally killed, regardless of their age. During this time, women gave birth in Ukrainian bomb shelters. Pregnant women from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Kherson, Mariupol were moved into the basements and safety zones in maternity hospitals; 42 700 children were born since the war started.
Children of War is an art project, conceived by Iryna Manukovska, a Ukranian artist. It is dedicated to newly born babies and their mothers, who continue to bring life to a deadly environment.
The Art project consists of the stories behind the baby delivery and a series of paintings in the national Ukrainian colours.
An innocent blue sky, like it was until the russian invasion. The yellow spikes of wheat convey the birth of each of the 15300 children. Each spikelet is created in an impasto technique to express a gentle patting on the newborn's head, symbolizing the love and support from everyone interacting with the artwork. The forename of the children will be written on top of each spikelet.
Each painting represents a Ukrainian city.
The idea behind - to show the new generation of Ukrainians, our hope, and the future.
The purpose is to collect support for newborns and their parents who survived.
